We offer a special tour that combines mythology and history, and we take you around the ancient world by exploring Athens’ landmark sites though timeless myths. Uncover fascinating stories from ancient Greek mythology, decode their meaning and the real-life events hidden behind them.
DAY 3: ATHENS
Shopping and local markets day
Experience another day as an Athenian, and walk in the stone built pavements where the ancient Greek philosophers used to walk and visit the fleet market for some authentic shopping experience. Time to catch your afternoon flight to the versatile and very exciting Crete!
DAY 4 : CRETE
Breathtaking hiking, how ancient Greeks used to live, taste local produce and the world famous island of Spinalonga
Time to put on your sneakers and find the Indiana Jones in you. We start by visiting the Acropolis of ancient Lato for a hiking route, one of the most impressive gorges in Crete. The perfect site for the enquiring mind to understand the socioeconomic conditions in Crete in the 4th-4d century B.C. , while savoring gorgeous vistas from the formidable fortified acropolis on a rugged twin peak. We are then headed to Gournia, the only urban site of Minoan Crete excavated by the American Harriett Boyd-Haws in the early 1900’s. The site offers a really good perspective of everyday life in Minoan times that included activities like agriculture, fishing, livestock-raising and pottery
Time for a well-deserved break! In the neighboring village of Kritsa, renowned for its’ woven textiles and lace manufacturers we will refresh ourselves with the locally famous almond beverage “soumada”, prepared for us by hospitable local ladies and have the chance to learn how to make -hands on- our own “mizithropites”-a soft dough pita stuffed with sweet ricotta topped with cinnamon and thyme honey, the necessary energy boost to continue with our day.
Return to hotel to enjoy the beach for a couple of hours. Refresh and get ready for a scenic drive along a beautiful coastline leads to the bustling waterfront settlement of Plaka, the link between Crete’s mainland and the Spinalonga leper colony from 1903 to 1957. From here the “living dead” were ferried across to the arid island-rock with the impressive 16th Venetian fortification walls to live the remaining of their lives locked up in absolute confinement away from home and family. Have a very interesting tour at the island of isolation, Spinalonga, best known for inspiring the Victoria’s Hislop’s best seller ‘The island’.
Time to call it a day after such an exciting day!
DAY 5: CRETE
The Palace of Knossos, Wine Tasting, Home Cooked Lunch and live like a local for a day
Wake up to another day of exploration, and visit the world-known Knossos with your private guide. The Palace of Knossos was the most important of the palaces on Crete, and the seat of the first king among equals of the island, Minos, whose name has been given to the whole of the 3rd and 2nd c. BC Minoan civilization.
Time to celebrate your loyalty and devotion to the historic part of this journey, with a glorious wine tasting at a local winery hosted by the winemaker himself. Our guide wants you to feel like home and so he invites you for a home-cooked lunch at his farm located at an olive grove. Many local delicacies are waiting for you on the table, and you get to do an olive oil tasting, which is produced from the grove you will be having your lunch at. Give yourself permission to be part of a locals life for a day and ask any questions you want; our host has lots of interesting stories to share.
After this unique lunch experience, sit back and enjoy a ride in your private transfers to the wild.. South of Crete, where you will be spending the night.
DAY 6 : CRETE
Coastal hike, lunch with the monks, the cave of St. Anthony, on board a fishermans boat and secluded beaches.
Today we explore a ruggedly gorgeous coastline that lies sheltered behind the Asterousia, the southern most natural border of Crete. The breathtaking switchback dirt road, offering sweeping sea and mountain vistas, down to the waterfront hamlet of Aghios Ioannis leads to the secluded Eligia beach where we gear up for a fairly easy 2-hour long hike on a beautiful trail along the gleaming sea. Under constant goat scrutiny and with scavengers hovering above, we reach hermits’ caves that date to the 5th century. Holy men sought shelter here, living an ascetic life of prayer and meditation, sleeping on rock cut beds and surviving on stalactite water. In the massive cave of St. Anthony, we may replenish water and energy before we continue on the trail that ends at the waterfront Greek Orthodox monastery of Virgin Mary, set at the mouth of the imposing Koudoumas Gorge. The hospitable monks will share their food with us and we will have some time to explore the monastery, perfectly maintained by the hard-working brothers, fragrant with basil and various spices..
When the time comes to return to our vehicles we board a local fisherman’s boat just outside the monastery walls and transfer to Elygia. It goes without saying that several stops will be made en route, so that we can go in the azure water in secret caverns and secluded beaches of exquisite natural beauty, known to just a handful of locals! When we reach Agios Ioannis later we take the dirt road once more, this time up, to a rustic local tavern for a meal of epic proportions! Superb seasonal salads made with locally sourced organic veggies, home-baked bread, fresh soft goat cheese, vegetarian and iconic lamb and goat dishes of Crete paired with excellent local wines, perfect closure to a perfect day. Upon conclusion of this feast, we transfer privately to our lodgings.
